Goals for 2011

I have always been a “list” maker–going way back to when my sister and I used to plan our summer stays with our Aunt Louise in Ohio. Back then my lists included such things as “buy new bobby pins” and “get glitter nail polish”. These goals were accomplished after loading cartons of  clanking Pepsi-Cola bottles from our back porch into the  ’64 Ford Fairlane and selling them back to the local grocery store to raise the needed funds.
Well, here I am in 2011 and still making lists. Not so much has changed. I still like glitter nail polish and I still like soda pop..:))
I actually made a lengthy list of goals. I “aired” them on my radio show (Artists Helping Artists–recorded for your listening pleasure) along with my co-host, Leslie Saeta.
Then I did the shedding thing. I looked at everything and condensed it down to what I felt most drawn towards.
And it came down to 3 things
I have found that my best self arrives in writing and painting when I employ the third.
Getting quiet.
I think I had to maneuver my way through the whole month of goal setting to arrive at finding myself once again.
As Thoreau said,
Simplify, simplify, simplify.

To which Emerson replied,
“I think one simplify would have sufficed.”

A wondrous new year to you my beautiful friend.  Welcome to 2011!

    I wish you well, Dreama…

Just to SEE the simple beauty in our lives is a worthy goal!ReplyCancel

    One single “simplify”!
First GREAT laugh of 2011, Thank you!!!
I was quite overwhelmed by the complexity of both the goal lists from your broadcast. In my old age I can only come up with three.
Thank you for making me feel like that is probably adequate….
    Love the radio show!ReplyCancel

I really like the approach you have circled yourself back around to with the 3 things you felt most important. Way to “simplify” and help us all do the same.
I look forward to a wonderful 2011 for all of us and to the workshop in Atlanta.ReplyCancel

I also love to make lists! That photo of you and your sister is precious and the Emerson quote gave me a chuckle. Simplify is a great theme for this year. Happy New Year.ReplyCancel

Dreama, I like your third goal. I try to have it often. For me, that silence could include less time on the computer this year. I am striving for that one. Too much of it is a ‘time robber’.ReplyCancel

This is such a great post. That silence idea is so important. We all fill our lives with noise and input, but we don’t process all the input to make it useful, it just bounces around in our minds and makes clutter. Silence is like waiting for the waves to die down and the water to smooth out the way it belongs…
I’m going to make room for more silence too! Thanks!ReplyCancel
