Before the Creative Process

Sometimes we forget.
We taste only the icing. We see only the end result. We hear only the applause.
We forget that creative inspiration wears many disguises.
We either forget or are not privy to what led up to…..

Creativity in it’s raw form can appear….
Off-track (Monet on waterlilies..”It took me time to understand my water lilies. I had planted them for the pleasure of it; I grew them without ever thinking of painting them.”–what, you mean he spent time GARDENING instead of painting?!@#)
Foolish (Actor Jim Carey of comedic fame openly admits he has made faces at himself in the mirror for years with threats from his mother that he would go to you know where for doing so!)
Childish (Rob Dyrdek of skateboard fame has probably endured more than a few looks of “get a real job man” before parlaying his skateboarding talent into 15 ml net worth)
Lazy (Truman Capote said of himself, I am a completely horizontal author. I can’t think unless I’m lying down, either in my bed or on a couch….)
Creativity often springs from times of inactivity (translated, things that are not obviously related to our creative work) Inactivity that we and/or those around us might interpret as lazy, as waste of time and money, decadent, or selfish.
Note to Self: Inspiration can’t be scheduled, it must be allowed for.
Notice when and where your creative ideas happen. Is it during or after a recent trip to the movies, from discovering a new musical artist, a long walk in a new place, a nap in the middle of the day, a drive to no where in particular, in the tub or shower, the latest novel?
Creative inspiration arises out those times when we take time to fill our well instead of drinking from it.
Be a sleuth.

I don’t drop many comments, however i did a few searching and wound up here “THE GREAT GRATITUDE ADVENTURE/ DAY EIGHTEEN/ DISGUISES”. And I do have a couple of questions for you if you tend not to mind. Is it simply me or does it give the impression like a few of these responses look as if they are coming from brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are posting on additional places, I would like to keep up with anything fresh you have to post. Would you make a list of all of your community sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?

Another great post! I’ve been studying the creative process of certain artists, and I find it fascinating. Here’s what I wrote about U2 on my blog:
“Anyway, while healing from my own back surgery and looking forward to the [U2]show, I started reading more about the band, paying particular attention to the interplay between band members and their creative process. It seems they are successful because they have faith in themselves, each other and their art; they check their individuals egos at the door; and they are committed to each other and to the process. A process that includes, as Andrew Robinson relates, “spend[ing] days in the studio slogging through various soundscapes. Most days are long, tiring, and frustrating. It is common for the four band members to end the day with absolutely nothing to show for it. But if they remain committed to this arduous, mundane process long enough something brilliant begins to emerge.” (Robinson’s quote is part of his larger discussion of the documentary film It Might Get Loud and the creative process in general.) In other words, they’re just like most of us – they have to work hard to get somewhere. Still.”
Today, I’m grateful for the wonderful weather we will have for most of this week — sunny and in the fifties! A great week to celebrate Thanksgiving — sunny and mild enough to really enjoy long walks with friends and family.

Greeting to all of Dreama’s soulful friends …
This is such wonderful and delicious food for thought, Dreama.
With me, it was simply and enjoying a leisurely cup of cup of coffee, in my kitchen, lingering sometimes for longer than I ‘should have’ been (when things like laundry, dishes, cleaning needed to be done). It did not seem, at first, to be the most creative thing to be doing, but for me, at that moment, it was. That eureka moment, creative/inspiration-wise, was definitely not scheduled – it just happened in its own time, and just casually waited for me to take notice and follow it up, and follow it through.
Walks along the country lanes, up towards the mountains or by our nearby lake also and very often offer so many inspiring moments that get the creative spark lit – I’ve since learned to always bring along either my journal or a sketchbook.
For those times, I will always be grateful.
For today (and for the past 27+ years), I am grateful for the love, support and constant creative encouragement from my beloved husband. Although he is an artist in his own right, he takes time out from working on his own paintings and art to help me when I sometimes get’stuck’ with my crafts projects.
I am grateful that I can trust that results don’t have to be immediately visible in order feel “successful”. After seeds are planted, they spend a lot of time underground doing important work before the fruit appears!
beautiful reminder! i’m thankful for things so much bigger and more beautiful than i can work up in my imagination or with my paint brush — an early run through the neighborhood this morning and watching the sunset. truly spectacular! and i felt small once again.

I am grateful for our move to Venice, Florida. Yesterday I was able to take a waterolor class with Anne Abgott in Bradenton. I am grateful for her kindness and the generosity of her teaching.
Today I am grateful that I have a wonderful relationship with my daughter, something that I doubted as she was growing up… She is giving me the glorious title of “Grandma” in a few months – it just doesn’t get better!

Sorry I missed a day, not because I wasn’t grateful but I was in the air and not connected. Today I’m grateful having the hootspa to buy a one way ticket to Paris and hope my “Postcards from Paris” sell so I can buy a ticket back. I’m also grateful to my Parisian pals for allowing me to stay in their home while they are away. I was inspired by your postcards from Italy Dreama; thank you so much for the idea. I am thankful to be in a relationship where the only one that criticizes my work habits is me.
I’m also thankful for my copy of Dreama’s Artists Toolbox, which helps me work more efficiently(when I’m not napping). I’ve found her suggestion of making a pass code notebook really handy, among other tips that save my sanity. If you don’t win one, buy one! Great!

I am grateful that I live in the United States of America and am free to paint and work as I choose.
I like the modern conveniences we have: hot running water at the flip of a switch, electricity to power many of our items that we take for granted, doctors and medicine to help us when we get sick, a nice home, and many more blessings I will reserve for another post.
